A three-story building under construction in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State collapsed on Saturday, January 5, 2025, injuring seven workers. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM while workers were on site. Eyewitnesses reported that several workers were able to jump clear as the structure gave way, but at least seven were trapped and sustained various injuries. Two workers reportedly jumped from the collapsing structure.
Initial rescue efforts were led by concerned neighbors and passersby using rudimentary tools to clear debris. Later, the Ikwerre Local Government Area, the Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, and the Ministry of Special Duties arrived on the scene. They swiftly deployed excavators, a fire truck, and ambulances to assist with rescue and evacuation of the injured.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Commissioner for Physical Planning described the collapse as a devastating event, affirming that prompt action by local residents and government officials ensured timely assistance to the victims.
The State Commissioner for Physical Planning attributed the collapse to the use of substandard building materials. He highlighted this as a recurring issue, noting that this was the fourth building collapse (since taking office) due to similar materials failures. Specifically, the use of 12mm rods in the building’s decking was cited as a clear violation of construction standards.
Furthermore, the commissioner emphasized that the developer of the building had omitted government-approved building plans. The property owner has been summoned for questioning as investigations continue. A clear warning was issued, stating that the government will no longer tolerate violations of building codes and compromised safety standards, particularly the use of substandard construction materials and missing building plans.
