No amount of money can buy my conviction- Ezekwesili

On May 4, 2025, Oby Ezekwesili, former Nigerian Minister of Education and a vocal advocate for transparency, forcefully refuted allegations of bribery. The accusations, leveled by UK-based activist Sandra Duru (also known as Professor Mgbeke), claimed Ezekwesili received payment to support Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Ezekwesili, in a statement posted to her X account, dismissed the claims as “laughable falsehoods.” She underscored her unwavering dedication to justice and accountability, writing, “No sensible and decent person who knows my incorruptible track record is deceived by the ridiculous fabrications being spread by my detractors. They know—without a doubt—that no amount of money, not even all the wealth in every Central Bank in the world, can buy my convictions, voice, and stance on any matter I choose to support.”

The former minister reiterated her steadfast backing of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has requested an investigation into her allegations. Ezekwesili emphasized that her support is rooted in principle, not political maneuvering or self-interest.

“We simply despise injustice and the abuse of power. Period,” she declared. “You will continue to have my unwavering, sacrificial support in your determined fight against this group of irresponsible politicians, led by the Senate President.”

Ezekwesili urged Nigerians to demand a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations against Akpabio, warning that any attempt to silence or undermine Akpoti-Uduaghan would prove futile. She further criticized Nigeria’s political establishment, stating that many prioritize personal gain over public service.

“Their understanding of service is nonexistent; money and self-interest are their only gods,” she asserted. “In contrast, I—like many of you—will continue, eternally, to live a life of purpose and sacrifice in the ongoing battle for a fair and just Nigeria.”

Her statement follows mounting public pressure for accountability within Nigeria’s Senate. Concluding her message, Ezekwesili issued a rallying cry: “So fight on, until justice is served!” The Senate President has yet to respond publicly to the renewed calls for an investigation.
