A Nigerian man named Emmanuel Ihejirika, who faced a death sentence in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has been freed following years behind bars. His release was achieved thanks to the pro bono work of Emmanuel Isha Ogebe, a Nigerian lawyer based in Washington, D.C. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), confirmed this news on Friday and commended Ogebe for his unwavering commitment and altruism in handling the case.
Dabiri-Erewa reflected on a past visit when a Nigerian delegation, including herself and led by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ojo Madueke, traveled to Indonesia to advocate for clemency for21 Nigerians sentenced to death for drug-related offenses. During that time, four individuals had already been executed, in addition to one Indonesian and one British citizen. In this instance, Ogebe took on Ihejirika’s case, convinced that a mistake had occurred regarding his identity. He diligently fought to present the matter before Indonesia’s Supreme Court, culminating in Ihejirika’s release in December.
In her commendation, Dabiri-Erewa remarked, “His selflessness and kindness in offering pro bono services for Ihejirika exemplify true compassion.” She also emphasized the severe nature of drug offenses in Indonesia, where death is the penalty for drug trafficking, and urged Nigerians to steer clear of any criminal activities. Additionally, she acknowledged Patricia Alechenu, the Nigerian Charge D’Affaires in Indonesia, for her constant support throughout the proceedings.
Ogebe expressed his gratitude towards Dabiri-Erewa for her enduring support of Nigerians living abroad and committed to collaborating further with NiDCOM to aid others in similar predicaments.
