The Oyo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a significant reduction in road fatalities in the state compared to last year. Preliminary statistics from the command, signed by Sector Commander Mrs. Rosemary Alo, show that 222 people lost their lives in road traffic crashes across Oyo State in 2024. This represents a decrease from the 270 fatalities recorded in 2023.
During the same period 2024, a total of 304 road crashes were recorded, compared to 495 incidents in 2023. The number of vehicles involved in crashes also saw a decrease, falling to 412 in 2024, down from 794 in the previous year. The FRSC noted that 779 people were injured in crashes in 2024, a decrease from the 1,321 injuries recorded in 2023, and a total of 1,795 people were involved in accidents in 2024 compared to 2,935 in 2023.
The FRSC attributes this positive trend to its aggressive public awareness and enforcement campaigns in 2024. The command’s approach now involves inclusive advocacy, encouraging passengers to actively participate in ensuring safe driving practices on the roadways. Mrs Alo highlighted that passengers often bear the brunt of accidents, and they should not remain passive when drivers violate traffic regulations.
The command strongly emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers and passengers alike must prioritize road safety to prevent loss of life and property.
