The UEFA Champions League football is back and we bring you the preview of the star match of Day 1 between Liverpool FC of England and PSG of France.
The match between these two giants promises to live up to its hype considering the strength and pedigree of both teams and their performances in the most glamorous European football competition last season. Both teams have been picked by pundits as tournament’s favorites.
For Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who played some tantalizing fast-paced attacking football last season, they are condemned to improving on their performance which saw them getting to the finals where they were pipped to the diadem by Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Real Madrid through a combination of experience on the side of the Madrid side and hard-luck on the Merseysiders’.
However, Manager of the team, Jurgen Klopp’s knows too well the team’s performances last season have brought them under the spotlight this season and that spurred them into recruiting capable hands during the European summer transfer window in areas where the team lacked strength.
The manager confessed in his pre-match conference that they have recruited capable hands where necessary. He said: “We knew what we wanted”. The team recruited Brazilian Alisson Becker from Roma FC of Italy for around €60million making him the most expensive goalkeeper in Europe.
The goalkeeping department was a major source of worry for Liverpool FC last season and getting Alisson who is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe fills a great void and a masterstroke for the team this season. They are solid at the back especially in the centre-half position with the intimidating presence of Dutchman Virgil Van Dirk who was recruited from Southampton FC for £70million, a British record signing for a defender.
Klopp’s activities in the transfer window where he recruited four players to bolster the strength of the team, underscore his determination to bring silverware to the Merseyside in this season. He brought in Guinean midfielder Nabiy Keita who had an impressive performance with RB Leipzig last season and Fabinho to join an already loaded mildfield.
And in the front line where the team are considered to be most dangerous, they parade one of the most potent attack lines in the competition. ,The front three combination of Firminho, Sadio Mane and Mo Sallah are capable of destroying any backline on any good day.
So, in all, the spotlight will be on Liverpool who will also be relying on heavy support from the home crowd in Wembley Stadium in today’s match.
