The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, and the Governorship Aspirant for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Kogi state, Senator Dino Melaye, has said that he would miss Senator Godswill Akpabio, who would not be returning to the Senate.
He referred to Akpabio as a “retired senator” and asked him to continue, or start to do things that would make Nigeria prosper.
He said even though Akpabio would not be with them in the ninth assembly, he was sure that they would meet on the streets of Abuja.
“As a retired senator, who is not going to be with us in the ninth assembly, you should also continue or start to do those things that will propel the prosperity of this country. Akpabio, I will miss you in the next Senate, but we will definitely meet on the streets of Abuja,” Dino Melaye said.
Senator Dino Melaye thanked his colleagues, reminding them that the battle to salvage Nigeria was enormous. He urged everyone of them to “continue to stand by the truth not minding whose ox is gored.”
Dino Melaye made the statement while giving his valedictory speech at the 8th National Assembly and he posted the video on his Instagram page, @dinomelaye, in a post he tagged “Last day of the 8th National Assembly.”
It will be recalled that while Dino Melaye and the then Senate President, Bukola Saraki decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the heat of the 2019 General Elections, Godswill Akpabio, the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District at that time, decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Godswill Akpabio eventually lost his re-election bid to the candidate of the PDP during the 2019 general elections. Dino Melaye’s reference to Akpabio as a “retired senator” may be an indirect allusion to his defeat by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – Eng. Chris Ekpeyong – in that election.
