Nigerian-British boxer, Anthony Joshua, has defeated his closest American rival, Andy Ruiz Jr, to regain the unified World Heavyweight title in boxing.
By this defeat, Joshua is now the undisputed title holder in the heavyweight category of WBA, WBO and IBF.
It will be recalled that Joshua suffered a defeat early this year in June in New York, United States of America, in what many have described as one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
In that fight, Joshua was knocked down four times and the Mexican-American won by knock out. It ended Joshua’s unbeaten record.
Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr held today 7th December 2019 in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua defeated Ruiz by a unanimous decision on match points.
A jubilant Joshua said at the end of the match that he had a lot of respect for Ruiz, his family and trainers but said that he really wanted to put up a good show.
Joshua said his son encouraged him by telling him he could win. According to Joshua, boxing is “about hitting and not getting hit.”
The new heavyweight champion said he was humble in defeat and will remain humble in victory.
You know the saying: ‘Stay hungry, stay humble.’ I’m hungry, I’m humble in defeat, and I’m going to remain humble in victory.”
