The Independent National Electoral Commission, Nigeria, has said that the Governorship election conducted in Osun State on Saturday recorded unprecedented events in different ways, noting that majority of the Polling Units opened on time.
In a Press Release in Osogbo, Osun State and posted on the verified Twitter handle of the the Commission, INEC says that reports from the conduct of the election shows that about 98% of the polling units opened on time.
INEC says that Independent Observers and many candidates testified to the fact that the election went on smoothly, election materials arrived on time , voters were orderly and most polling units opened at the designated time of 8.00am.
“In fact, most of the reports received by the Commission indicate that about 98% of the 3,010 Polling Units opened on time, which surpassed the situation in all previous elections organised by the Commission”.
Besides, INEC believes that the Governorship Election is one of the most keenly contested elections in the country in recent times. INEC thus congratulated the electorates in Osun State for their “keen interest in the polls, as shown in the large turnout, their orderliness and respect for the rules governing the process”.
INEC is also full of appreciation for stakeholders: “We also thank all stakeholders, including the political parties and candidate, election observers, security agencies, traditional rulers, for their unprecedented cooperation before, during and since the election”.
